A surprising statistic kicked off this week’s IA Fast Forward: roughly four out of five policyholders say they have never received proactive communication from their insurance agent.
That means a lot of customers are hearing from the carrier, but barely hearing from the person who actually sold them the policy.
And that is a problem.
Shane makes an important point in the episode: customer experience should not start at renewal.
It should start during onboarding and continue throughout the year.
The goal is to make renewal feel like a continuation of an existing relationship, not the first time your customer has thought about you in twelve months.
A quick check-in.
A helpful reminder.
A relevant text or email.
Something that reminds the client:
“My agent knows who I am.”
That kind of communication creates retention because the relationship already exists before price becomes the focus.
Automation can help, but sending one generic birthday email every year is not a customer experience strategy.
The best communication feels useful.
Maybe that means different messages for different generations. Maybe it means using AI to help organize clients and decide how they prefer to hear from you. Maybe it simply means building a few intentional touchpoints into the year.
It does not have to be perfect.
It just has to start.
If the only time a customer hears from your agency is when you need a renewal decision or another premium payment, it is hard for them to feel like the relationship matters.
Do something before renewal.
Start small. Be useful. Stay consistent.
Because better communication does not just improve the customer experience.
It gives clients another reason to stay.
