If your entire sales process starts with “let me get you a quote,” you are playing a game the biggest insurance companies are built to win.
Insurance consumers have been trained to shop.
“Get a quote.”
“Save 15%.”
“Compare rates.”
After years of massive advertising campaigns, insurance can start to look like every option is interchangeable and the only meaningful difference is price.
That creates a problem for insurance agencies.
You probably cannot outspend the biggest brands.
And you probably should not try to out-quote them either.
This week on IA Forward, the team talks about commoditization, the process of turning something distinct into something consumers see as interchangeable.
Once that happens, the decision becomes:
Who is cheaper?
But insurance is supposed to protect some of the most valuable things your clients own.
That should involve more than generating a number and hoping yours is the lowest.
Shane shares a story about hiring a highly specialized attorney to handle a copyright issue.
The attorney was expensive.
But Shane was not shopping him against five other attorneys looking for the cheapest option.
He wanted the person he trusted to solve the problem.
That is the position an insurance agency should be working toward.
You are not simply producing prices.
You are understanding risk, explaining options, and making a professional recommendation.
People are willing to value expertise differently than they value a commodity.
That shift does not happen overnight.
But it can start with something very small:
Stop asking, “Can I get you a quote?”
Start thinking:
“Let me understand what you need, then I’ll come back with my recommendation.”
