Find Your State

Your Best Niche Might Already Be in Front of You

Agency owners hear a lot about finding a niche.

Pick an industry. Become the expert. Build your marketing around it.

That can work.

But this week’s IA Forward conversation raised an important point: specialization does not always begin with a grand strategy.

Sometimes it grows naturally.

Shane shared how their agency started generally, wrote one school district, then another, and eventually built significant experience in that space. What started as regular business eventually became an area of expertise.

Start With What You Can Actually Write

Before spending money marketing a niche, look at your carriers.

What industries do they want?

Where do you already have strong market access?

What overlaps with your own knowledge, background, or relationships?

The wrong order is choosing an industry because it produces large premiums, building an entire campaign around it, and only then discovering that your carriers have little appetite for the business.

The better approach is to find the overlap between opportunity, knowledge, and carrier appetite.

Your Previous Career Can Be an Advantage

Sometimes your specialty is already hiding in your experience.

If you worked in equipment sales, construction, healthcare, education, or another industry before insurance, you may already understand the customers, terminology, and challenges in that space.

That familiarity can make the transition into a specialty much easier.

You do not have to become an expert in everything.

Find the areas where you already have an advantage and build from there.
