I was watching football with my husband last weekend when a Nike commercial caught my attention. The ad was everything you’d expect: fast cuts, powerful music, athletes pushing limits. But at the very end, something flashed across the screen that made me sit up. Instead of Nike’s iconic Just Do It, I saw the words Why Do It? And in red block letters, not Nike’s familiar font.
My husband, who can miss a llama sitting on the sofa, hadn’t noticed it at all. But I couldn’t let it go. Later that night I was digging through marketing articles, and sure enough, after 35 years, Nike was pivoting Just Do It to Why Do It?
The explanation? Nike believes younger generations won’t respond to Just Do It because of perfectionism and hesitation. Why Do It is meant to speak to Gen Z and Gen Alpha with a more reflective, purpose-driven angle.
Here’s where my brain went into overdrive.
As a Gen Xer, Just Do It was part of my DNA. It was about grit, confidence, and forward motion. Why Do It feels softer, more contemplative. It asks us to pause. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that Why Do It actually makes sense.
Because if you’re considering leaving a captive carrier, or stepping out of a comfortable producer role to build something of your own, you’re already asking yourself that very question: Why do it? Why take the risk? Why walk away from stability? Why face the uncertainty of starting from scratch?
The answer is simple. Because it’s yours.
Independence isn’t easy. Starting a new business comes with fear, failure, and plenty of “what ifs.” But the reward is ownership. You’re not building someone else’s dream. You’re building your own. That’s a "why" worth fighting for.
So maybe Nike’s shift is more relevant to us than we think. Not because we should abandon the drive of Just Do It. But when you find your why, you stop playing games and start creating your legacy.
Be fearless!
